Fugu Wears

Fugu Wears was born from founders Yuwen and Corey’s shared love of collecting retro ’80s, ’90s and Y2K clothing and homewares. Growing from local markets into a thriving online marketplace, their Smith Street store became a physical space to share their curated finds—and keep unwanted treasures out of landfill.

The brief was to refresh the store while staying true to Fugu’s sustainable ethos: reuse as much as possible, create a flexible space that could evolve over time, and work within an incredibly lean budget with a design the owners could largely deliver themselves.

To achieve this, the existing scaffolding pipe used for clothing racks was dismantled, modified and reconfigured into a more cohesive framework for display. Its inherently adjustable connections were already well suited to the changing heights, lengths and arrangements required by Fugu’s constantly shifting vintage inventory.

Simple stained plywood plinths provide movable display and storage, able to be rearranged or used as seating for social events at the shopfront window.

The intent was to create a simple kit of parts: an exercise in how little can be done to maximum effect, improving functionality, flexibility and visual cohesion while making use of what was already there.
