A Sustainability Statement
We acknowledge the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we work, and we extend our respect to all First Nations peoples, past, present and emerging.
At LIAN, we believe architecture has a responsibility to respond to the environmental and social challenges of our time. Our work explores responses to Australia's necessary urban transitions, primarily in housing. We design spaces that support healthy, resilient and adaptable ways of living, while respecting cultural and ecological context.
Sustainability is not a separate add-on. It is woven into how we think and design, from the earliest ideas through to completion. We offer down to earth proposals that explore ways of orienting ourselves within our changing environments, to make the most with what we've got. This grounded approach values careful observation of the everyday and responds to the specific conditions of each site.
Responding to climate and place
We orient buildings for optimal solar access, natural ventilation and thermal comfort. Our designs prioritise northern light to living spaces and embrace passive design principles that reduce energy consumption.
Designing for longevity and adaptability
We create flexible spaces that can evolve with changing needs over time. Our Future Homes competition-winning design demonstrated how adaptable, block-like planning allows dwellings to range from studios to four bedrooms, prioritising the amenity and spatial delight of each home.
Minimising environmental impact
We prioritise durable, low-embodied energy materials and embrace material reductionism. We value simplicity and restraint, recognising that beauty can come from the generosity of space, air and light rather than expensive finishes. We advocate for performance-based outcomes and work collaboratively to achieve measurable improvements in energy efficiency and material selection.
Supporting healthy, connected communities
Good design contributes to wellbeing and social resilience. Our work in housing, including projects with Nightingale Housing and Homes Victoria, demonstrates our commitment to creating well-designed, environmentally responsible homes that prioritise liveability and community connection. We believe everyone deserves access to quality housing with generous natural light, connection to gardens, and spatial qualities that make living a delight.
Respecting what exists
We recognise that the most sustainable building is often the one that already exists. Our renovation work strengthens ties between interior and exterior, honouring the spirit of existing structures while enhancing their usability and environmental performance for future generations.
We aim to continually improve how we practise. This includes embedding sustainability into our internal operations and project processes, exploring research-led design approaches, and working collaboratively with clients, consultants and builders to achieve better environmental outcomes.
We welcome opportunities to work with partners who share our commitment to responsible design and who value the long-term benefits of thoughtful, sustainable architecture.
